As we celebrate Presidents Day on Monday, a review of some pets that spent time in the White House over the last century or so is in order. For those of us who love American history, it is interesting to note that many of our furry
friends had a big impact on our cultural fabric. From President William McKinleys (in office from 1897-1901) famous and exotic Mexican yellow-headed parrot to President Barack Obamas cool dog named Bo, the presidential pets have remained a major part of the American presidency.
While most of our Presidents had pets, a few made their pets a major part of their administration.
President William Taft (1909- 1913) was responsible for bringing the last cow to the White House. Yes, that was a big deal. Why? Cows were the most common presidential pets of the 1800s. Of course, dogs won that distinction in the 20th century. And, President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) kept track of his favorite pet named Old Ike, a tobacco-chewing ram, from the windows of the White House. Old Ike and a few sheep were allowed to graze the White House lawn.
For instance, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933-1945) had a faithful and loyal companion named Fala, a black Scottish terrier. Fala traveled with the president on trips abroad and was often photographed by the press. He was a master of tricks and entertained the president and all those around him.
A beloved White House pet just like the Clintons cat socks, Fala lived most of his life at the White House. In addition, Roosevelt owned many other dogs including Major, a German shepherd; Tiny, an English sheepdog; and a great dane aptly named President.
When it comes to resemblances, Fala looked something like Miss Beazley, the 10- week-old Scottish terrier that arrived at the White House during the George W. Bush administration in January of 2005. The canine was a surprise birthday present for first lady, Laura Bush.
A few presidents hosted nothing short of zoos when they were in the White House, such as Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Teddy Roosevelt. President Calvin Coolidge served from 1923 to 1929 and he and his wife, Grace, were pet lovers. The first couples white collie was best known to the American public yet the Coolidges also had terriers, airedales, chow chows, bulldogs, and a Shetland sheepdog.
In addition to the dogs, canaries and mockingbirds were the beloved pets of Grace. The most exotic pets of the Coolidge administration were gifts from dignitaries including a wallaby, a pygmy hippo, and African lion cubs.
No matter the president, in terms of sheer numbers of pets, Theodore Roosevelt trumped all of his White House colleagues when it came to the animal menagerie. A great games-man, hunter, and naturalist,
Roosevelt brought many, many animals with him and his large family to the White House during his years of service from 1901 to 1909.
Roosevelts favorite pet was said to be a horse named Bleistein. Yet, there were other horses that the president rode with regularity including Renown, Roswell, Rusty, Jocko, Root, Grey, Dawn, Wyoming, and Yangenkah. The menagerie of pets living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during much of the first decade of the 20th century also included owls, lizards, roosters, guinea pigs, cats, badgers, raccoons, and hyenas. And, national fame came to Alice Roosevelts pet snake and Quentin Roosevelts macaw named Eli Yale an interesting names since the president graduated from Harvard.
Little Quentin Roosevelt was nearly 4 years old when his family moved into the White House. He and his siblings had a pony named Algonquin, who became almost as famous as his young masters for all of the mischief they caused. One day, in an effort to cheer up his sick brother, Archie, young Quentin brought the pony named Algonquin into the White House and upstairs to his brothers bedroom using a small service elevator. With animal trophy heads decorating the State Dining Room and a bunch of young Roosevelt children bringing all kinds of pets into the famous home, the story of presidential pets was never the same.
In looks and vigor, Algonquin rivaled Caroline Kennedys beloved pony named Macaroni. Like many other presidential children, the Kennedy children received pets as gifts. Macaroni, for example, was a gift from Vice President, Lyndon Johnson. Macaroni roamed the White House grounds and received fan letters from the public. And, Carolines dog, Pushinka, was given to her by the Soviet Unions head of state at the time, Nikita Khrushchev.
Happy Presidents Day!

Have you ever loved something so much you can’t even put it intowords because just trying to vocalize it or explain it will makeyou sound completely incompetent? As a child, these thingsincluded, but were not limited to: pink and/or blue freeze pops,Donald Duck, JC from N*Sync (because I was a child of discerningtaste and all of those who claimed to “love” Justin Timberlake wereconformist sheep), and “Arthur” on PBS.
As an adult, I pretty much still love all of these things, although the list of things has grown considerably in mypost-adolescent years- Nicki Minaj, vampires, the library from”Beauty and the Beast,” Chipotle, and a wide array of musicalobsessions, including most recently, “Somebody That I Used toKnow,” a searing indie pop-rock song by Australian import Gotyefeaturing New Zealand singer Kimbra.
Gotye (pronounced like go-tee-aye), was hugely successful inAustralia, with three independent albums already under his belt and”Somebody…” peaking at Number One on the charts there. Iteventually surpassed Savage Garden’s “Truly Madly Deeply” in 1997as the longest-running Aussie single. The song comes from his mostrecent album, Making Mirrors, and is his most successfulentry stateside to date.
Gotye has said that he drew inspiration for the song from a widearray of crashed-and-burned relationships, but one in particularwas the basis for the track, which details a messy break-up and itscold aftermath. Kimbra provides a rebuttal in the song as the voiceof the aforementioned “somebody.”
The song has gone platinum internationally and has spawnedcritical acclaim as well as a myriad of award nominations, including four ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) nomsand three wins for Gotye, including Single of the Year, Best MaleArtist, and Best Pop Release, as well as a Best Female Artist winfor collaborator Kimbra.
Gotye (and Kimbra) were recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live performingthe song, and really, is there any moment more perfect when thelive performance of a song you love sounds almost exactly like therecording sans lipsynching? I think not.

Finding the Perfect Aussie Shepherd Breeder
Article by John Robbins
Why do I need to find the “perfect” Aussie breeder? “Aren’t all breeders the same?” you may ask. I’m glad you asked. All breeders in general and all Aussie breeders specifically are definitely NOT the same. Perhaps your really don’t need to find the perfect Aussie breeder but you do want to find the breeder that is “perfect for you” You should look at the breeder of your pet as much more than a person to buy a dog from if you want to make the best decision for you and your pet. A good breeder is your best friend in this process. He will provide lots on great information about the nature and care of the breed – in this case, the Australian Shepherd.
Good breeders will take great lengths to insure that the dog is healthy and free of genetic defects where “puppy mill” type breeders will not. I don’t like to think that the second type of breeders even exist but they do so just make sure that you’re not dealing with one. Don’t rush out with the idea that you are buying a dog today. Take the time to talk to and even visit several of the Aussie breeders near you. As you do this it will become apparent who the best breeders are. You can definitely find the perfect dog for you through the help of these breeders.
Here are some tips to help you know when you’ve found a good breeder:
• Take time to interview several of the Aussie breeders in your area. Look for a breeder that is friendly and approachable and willing to take the time to answer any question you might have. This is the mark of a top breeder. He or she will be passionate about Aussies and willing to help you select just the right Aussie for your home.
• Ask if the breeder belongs to a breeder’s club. A breeder who seems proud to be part of his club or holds an office within it is likely to be more reputable than one who does not.
• The breeder’s facilities should be kept clean and sanitary. Although there might be several puppies around doing what puppies do, puppy “messes” should be attended to in a reasonable amount of time and the puppies should be kept clean.
• Look for a breeder that will provide documentation of your prospective pup’s veterinary care since birth. He should also be willing to provide contact information for the Vet and/or allow you to have your pup examined by your own vet. This will give you some assurance that the dog is healthy and is free from any disease or birth defect.
• Avoid rushing to make a decision. A good breeder who will give you ample time to decide on when you would want to purchase your Aussie and will not pressure you to buy immediately. If you feel pressured at all you should walk away.
• Papers and a guarantee. I have personally received falsified AKC papers from a breeder. The best breeders will also give you a written guarantee that your pup’s bloodline is accurately documented and will stand the test of time. You should be allowed to return the dog in good health for a full refund should that prove not to be true.
• Take time to interview several of the Aussie breeders in your area. Look for a breeder that is friendly and approachable and willing to take the time to answer any question you might have. This is the mark of a top breeder. He or she will be passionate about Aussies and willing to help you select just the right Aussie for your home.
• The best breeders will probably have some questions for you as well. Don’t be defensive if you are asked about your home environment, work schedules, hobbies, etc. The best breeders know that thinking about these things can make all the difference in the success of the Aussie in your home.
For example: Aussie’s are high-energy dogs and they need a certain amount of physical activity every day. When a breeder asks if you like outdoor sports like biking, jogging, walking, etc. this is what he may be getting at. Your breeder will be well aware of the Aussie’s needs and will want you to think about whether you are able to provide them. Someone whose idea the perfect evening is sitting in a comfortable chair with a cup of tea and the latest best-seller would not be a good candidate for Aussie ownership and it the best thing for both you and the Aussie to consider this beforehand. If you think an Aussie is in your future pay close attention to these tips and you’ll make the right decision.

A family has their puppy back after, they say, it was taken Sunday morning by a stranger.
Kayla Causey tells 11 News that the dog was put back on the porch Tuesday. She has no idea where the puppy was or who took it.
Previous Coverage:————————————————
The theft happened during a chaotic time at the Skyway Village Apartments, when a fire had broken out at the complex on the southwest side of Colorado Springs.
Firefighters were able to put out the blaze quickly; it was contained to just one unit at the complex. But during a busy time for emergency workers and tenants, a puppy went missing
“He wasn’t out for that long,” Kayla Causey said about 7-week-old Blue Heeler “Mickey.”
The dog was out back with her 7-year-old child.
“We asked him what happened,” Causey said. “He said a lady had come up to the fence, asking ‘can I borrow your dog,’ saying ‘just don’t tell mommy or daddy,’ and reached over the gate, grabbed the dog and left.”
And just like that, weeks after Causey and her fiancé got the puppy, he’s gone.
“That’s my children’s dog,” Causey said. “It’s not just a dog, it’s part of our family. And all I want is…him back.”
The mother is also frightened that a stranger approached her son at home.
“It’s absolutely terrifying because what if it wasn’t a dog–what if they had taken him?” Causey wondered.
Her son gave a description, but it’s vague: an older woman with short white hair.
If you know where the puppy is, please call Causey at 719-217-8709.

Posted by: Mike on Feb 21, 2012 at 09:34 PM Jen is a moron. Heelers, Australian Cattle Dogs are working dogs. In place of cows and sheep they chase balls , frisbees , and sticks. They play hard because they were bred to work hard. Border Collies can be intense in the same way, working dogs. I haven’t seen any that make good guard dogs let alone attack dogs. Just hard working, devoted and loyal companions. Very headstrong too. Posted by: …….. on Feb 21, 2012 at 09:30 PM I own a red heeler. Finally, she won the starving moms trust and was able to secure her from the hazards of the busy road. But now the real rescue work of finding the puppies began.
The incredible thing about rescue groups in Macon is they know how to rally the troops to help one another. So the lady from Macon Purrs N Paws contacted several folks from her own group and others and had me post on my Facebook pages about needing help.
Well, if you know anything about my 9,000 Facebook followers, you know theyre loyal, passionate people and will do anything to help. So an army responded to search for the puppies.
One volunteer brought tracking beagles. Another volunteer took the mother dog through the woods to get her to lead them to her litter. There were others who were there for moral support. Even my dad, Van VanDeWalker, was helping out.
The volunteer accompanying the mother dog through the woods ended up in the Lake Wildwood neighborhood. He found a young man who recognized the dog and directed them to her home. Finding no one at home, the volunteer and mother dog trekked back through the woods to the interstate to inform the other volunteers.
When they returned to the dogs home, they found the gentleman home. He explained the mother dog escaped through a break in the fence and hed been searching for her to reunite her with her babies. Her four-week old puppies were at the house.
As if Macon Purrs N Paws hadnt done enough good deeds for one day, they offered to vaccinate the puppies in a couple of weeks and make adoption arrangements so theyll be placed in excellent homes.
And theres more. Theyre even getting the mother dog spayed after her puppies are gone!
Macon Purrs N Paws really went the extra mile to save the mother dog from tragedy on the interstate, to reunite her with her puppies, to make sure they have great homes and to make sure this is the last litter the mom has! But these humble heroes would tell you its all in a days work.

“I am only one … but still I am one. I cannot do everything … but still I can do … something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” – Helen Keller
Life if I didn’t have a dog or a cat
I could walk around the yard barefoot.
My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated. All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair.
When the doorbell rings, it wouldn’t sound like a kennel. I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there.
I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.
The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: Out, sit, down, come, no, stay, and leave it ALONE.
My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers.
I would not talk ‘baby talk’. ‘Eat your din din’. ‘Yummy yummy for the tummy’…
My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere.
I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L, W-A-L-K, T-R-E-A-T, O-U-T, G-O, R-I-D-E, C-O-O-K-I-E.
I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.
I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much.
I’d look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading ‘mud’ season.
I would not have to answer the question … ‘Why do you have so many animals?’ from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an ANGEL as they will ever get.
How EMPTY, how BORING, my life would be!

‘Simba’ is a handsome medium-haired, extra-large gray-and-white tabby cat who loves everyone. He will make a welcome addition to any cat lover’s home. ‘Happy’ is a female Jack mix with a docked tail. She is a loving dog and will make a fine companion dog. Happy is heartworm positive and would need a monthly dose of vet prescribed Advantage Multi to kill the heartworms over a period of time. It also kills fleas. (It is wise to continue Advantage Multi to protect against heartworms and prevent flea infestation. Both of my dogs receive a monthly dose. Always consult with your vet before starting your pet on any medication/prevention.) ‘Onyx’ is a glossy black German shepherd who is heartworm negative. He is a friendly fellow and enjoys attention. ‘Freckles’ is one of the cutest little beagle pups at the shelter. He will be a perfect family dog and has a very gentle, loving nature. Please visit the shelter and meet these and all of our deserving pets.
Friday it was a pleasure to walk into the shelter to take pictures of the pets for this column and also display them on petfinder.com. There were cheerful volunteers helping the animals and numerous people adopting pets. These pets’ lives depend upon adoption. We receive over 100 pets a week and our numbers won’t change until people spay or neuter the pets they now own. You can make a difference at the shelter by volunteering on your own schedule. Bathe pets to make them more adoptable, walk dogs, socialize animals, hand out treats and toys and any way you are able to help. Consider fostering for the shelter. Being a foster saves two lives, the one you foster and the one who takes its place. If you can’t volunteer or foster but want to help in other ways, here are some ideas: Although the floors are heated, dogs and puppies like to lie on dog blankets. It makes them feel secure and more comfortable. We currently need dog sweaters and blankets/fleece material, dog no-tears shampoo, towels for drying the dogs after a bath, high-quality dry dog/puppy/cat/kitten food, canned pet food, pet bottles/formula for kittens and puppies, toys, soft cuddly stuffed animals (no beanie babies), treats, Clorox bleach, Germ-ex (hand sanitizer), paper towels, toilet paper, office supplies, etc.
Local homeless pets need your help! A wonderful way to remember or honor a loved one or pet is to make an honorarium or memorial donation to the shelter. Your money will be used locally to help homeless shelter pets and keep the shelter running. Specify who the donation is to, with complete address where notification or acknowledgment should be sent and your complete address. We will do the rest. Categories are: The Beagley Fund (heartworm treatment for shelter pets only) which seems to stay depleted, General Fund, Champ Lewis Fund (monetary adoption assistance), Save-a-Life Makeover (professional grooming to make a pet more appealing and adoptable), Honorariums and Memorials. Mail to the Dyersburg-Dyer Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 223, Dyersburg, TN 38025-0223. Please send monetary donations or correspondence to the post-office box because we do not receive mail at the shelter.
Please visit the shelter between 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday. We are located at 1120 E. Court St. in Dyersburg and phone number is 285-4889.

Two exceedingly burnt puppies were carrying out OK Friday afternoon after they underwent dilettante skin procedures to help save their lives at a veterinary trickery in ThousandOaks.
Dr. A. Richard Grossman, owner of the Grossman Burn Centers, supervised the focus of biological sauce to casing the puppies’ wounds at the Pet Emergency Clinic and Specialty Hospital on North MoorparkRoad.
“They’re seeking a heck of a lot improved ” improved than we would ever, ever think,” mentioned Grossman, who initial saw the puppies Monday. “They’re getting great care, and we only have to keep carrying out it, that’sall.”
The biological sauce was used in place of skin grafts since the puppies, with third-degree consume on more than 50 percent of their bodies, do not have sufficient skin left on their minuscule bodies that could be used forgrafting.
Veterinarian Cheryl Braswell mentioned if the puppies reply good to the biological application, they might not need skin grafts downtheroad.
Natalia, a black-and-white array longhorn terrier mix, and Phoenix, a brownish-red dachshund mix, were harmed when an outbuilding they were being housed in held glow Feb. 8. They were brought to Thousand Oaks for treatment by Zack Skow, owner of Marley’s Mutts rescue organisation inTehachapi.
Each puppy in spin was anesthetized Friday and keenly monitored as Grossman and his medicine helper Kurt Richards spotless the putrescent and oozing wounds and then kindly placed PriMatrix, a dermal hankie subsequent from unborn cow fetuses, opposite the rawredareas.
“What this does is supply us with a skeleton and helps the wound reanimate quicker,” Richards mentioned as he expansion antibiotic lotion on tip ofthedermis.
PriMatrix was created by Boston-based TEI Biosciences to treat consume in humans and other wounds caused by skin ulcers, mishap and surgery, according to the biomedical company’swebsite.
The dermis was covered with compress and externa; dressings that will sojourn in place for 48 hours, Grossmansaid.
While the procession is something Richards is in the habit of to carrying out as Grossman’s assistant, it’s the initial time he’s achieved itondogs.
“It tugs at your heart strings,” mentioned Richards, who’s worked with Grossman for 10 years and owns a French bulldog. “It’s indeed a team effort, and it’s nice to be a segment of this in a few small way and to help thesedogsheal.”
Grossman, who plans to lapse to the Pet Emergency Clinic on Monday or Tuesday, mentioned the procession will be steady as necessary, depending on how healingprogresses.
He mentioned it’s unfit to envision how long the puppies’ liberation might take and either they will ultimatelysurvive.
It’s now costing about $2,000 per puppy per day to treat them, and that’s not counting what it would cost if Grossman, one of the world’s heading experts in treating burns, was charging for his services, mentioned Christopher Frier, boss of the Pet Emergency Clinic and SpecialtyHospital.
Skow, who gathering from Tehachapi to be there is to procedure, mentioned the preference by Grossman and the Pet Emergency Clinic to relinquish all their costsis”magical.”
“It’s over description. we am only incredibly thankful ” thankful to my core,” mentioned Skow, 32, who founded the nonprofit rescue in 2009 after being diagnosed with end-stage liverdisease.
Skow had proposed attractive for donations to help pay for veterinary caring and mentioned he’s been contacted by people from all opposite the republic who have been overwhelmed by the puppies’plight.
“I got a $2 and 37 cent contribution from a 6-year-old in the Bronx, and that’s his allowance, and it’s small things similar to that that make it all value it,”hesaid.
He mentioned he’s moreover listened from a number of erupt victims for whom the puppies have become a symbolofhope.
The allowance lifted will be used to help pay is to puppies’ one after another reconstruction once they are good sufficient to leave Thousand Oaks, Skowsaid.
Frier mentioned he believes all the efforts to help the dogs tarry areworthit.
“Literally, the animal has no financial value other than emotional. You can’t put a cost on it,” Friersaid.
